racing like a pro

Racing Like A Pro
The National

“You’re pink, you’re young, you’re middle class
They say it doesn’t matter
Fifteen blue shirts and womanly hands
You’re shooting up the ladder

Your mind is racing like a pro now
Oh my god, it doesn’t mean a lot to you
One time you were a glowing young ruffian
Oh my god, it was a million years ago

Sometimes you get up and bake a cake or something
Sometimes you stay in bed
Sometimes you go la di da di da di da da
Until your eyes roll back into your head

Your mind is racing like a pro now
Oh my god, it doesn’t mean a lot to you
One time you were a glowing young ruffian
Oh my god, it was a million years ago

You’re dumbstruck baby
You’re dumbstruck baby, now you know

You’re dumbstruck baby
You’re dumbstruck baby, now you know

Your mind is racing like a pro now
Oh my god, it doesn’t mean a lot to you
One time you were a glowing young ruffian
Oh my god, it was a million years ago

You’re dumbstruck baby
You’re dumbstruck baby, now you know
You’re dumbstruck baby
You’re dumbstruck baby, now you know

You’re dumbstruck baby”

food for thought / closing doors

“Closing a door on an option is experienced as a loss, and people are willing to pay a price to avoid the emotion of loss,” Dr. Ariely says.

left my heart in San Francisco

“Play soccer with me Lexi!”

—Mason, 4/8/11

“I don’t make any of my own decisions. Mommy and Daddy make good decisions for me!”

—Anna, 4/8/11

Sometimes I think I love Anna and Mason like crazy and then I see them and fall in love with them even harder. Back from one of my best trips yet to San Francisco and wishing I could just stop on by and see them all again today vs. July. They have a wonderful life out there and I feel lucky to share even a few days in their corner of the world. Shouldn’t every kid grow up like this?

Several times I wanted some magical way to stop them from growing up so fast—Anna is really and truly a girl now, no longer close to a toddler, and Mason talks and talks and is a real little person now instead of an adorable quiet baby boy. I wish I could relive it all and somehow record their 2-year-old and 4-year-old-ness with my mind, but written words and tons of photos will have to do.

Highlights!

– Anna showing me off to her preschool teachers/class. I got to walk in one morning when we dropped her off and she led me around to each of her teachers and proudly proclaimed “This is my Auntie!” I recognized a lot of the teachers from the project I’d done for Stephie last year, and they were all so nice. I even got to stand in front of the class and be introduced which was hilariously adorable. They left some time for ‘questions’, and the ‘questions’ from the 4-year-olds were basically statements. “I’ve been to Minneapolis!” “My name is Lexi too!” “I really like your purse.” (That last one from Anna’s little friend—my purse was the only bright [pink] thing on me, and the girl was in head-to-toe pink. Ha!) It was so cool to see where Anna spends a lot of her time and the school was great.

– Mason being a real little person! One of the most amazing things to me on this visit was how receptive he was to me; I mean, he’s 2, he shouldn’t even know who I am, you know? But Stephie does a terrific job with prep and he wasn’t a bit shy with me once. When Anna reinstigated ‘hug-attacks’ (note, this will probably have to stop soon as she is getting pretty big!) and we were horsing around on the floor, Mason, having no idea really what we were doing other than it looked like fun, immediately jumped into place saying “me too me too! my turn my turn!” and RAN headfirst into me. (This is also how he said goodbye to me too, basically with a full body-check, so I hope I haven’t confused him too badly…ha.) He acted like he’d known me his whole life (well, he has, but, you know) and that I’d always been around, and on my first morning there even woke up and said to Stephie “I play with Lexi?” which melts my heart. Awwww. He’s just turned into the friendliest, cutest, chattiest kid ever and he amazes me.

– Watching Mason play pretty much anything. Golf/soccer/basketballs and trains/trucks, he’s pretty much the happiest kid ever no matter which it is. He even played princesses with Anna. He always wants to play with everyone so he says “Play soccer with me Lexi! Play golf with me Mommy!” etc etc. Then he runs and kicks, runs and kicks, over and over and over. (He is sooooooo coordinated too, it’s really bizarre almost.) When he plays with his trains or trucks he talks to himself quietly and often talks about the ‘guys’ (people) in/on the truck/train/”hotter” (airplane in Mason-speak) which is hilarious. He gets so focused and lost in his little world.

– House of Air with Anna and Stephie! So cool. I would do flips and Anna would just say “watch me Aunt Lexi!” and be totally unimpressed with my tricks, convinced hers were better, LOL! I also got to see the kids at swimming lessons which was great. Mason looked so cute with his little goggles, ha, and was so proud of ‘run run run JUMP!’ into the water. The day where we went to House of Air was also just a special treat day for Anna which was fun :). We got to pick her up at ballet (so cute) and then go out to lunch and hang out with her little friend/their family too. Then got treats after too.

– Mason thinking Anna’s baby doll is alive…um, that was awesome. One night before bed we were all hanging out in Anna’s room and Mason demanded that I hold up the baby doll for him. He then spent almost five minutes jumping in front of the baby and yelling at the top of his lungs “baaaay-BEEEEE!” at the baby’s face and then laughing his head off. WTF?!?! It was hilarious and I would LOVE to know what he was thinking! The next night he cuddled up with the baby on Anna’s bed and was whispering to it. Again, ??? HILARIOUS and adorable.

– Anna/Mason ‘doing’ my hair with Anna’s toy blowdryer/brush one morning. I still don’t have my hair things back…hahaha.

– Playing at the park with Anna, she is such a good climber! She could swing from one horizontal bar to the other and go all the way across. I don’t think we think of her as strong but she is very strong indeed. Even if her going down that pole scared me a bit!

– Mason smashing Anna with the wrapping paper roll from behind her back and Anna’s retaliation the next day with the soccer ball. OK, so that wasn’t funny or nice, but it was memorable because (a) siblings fight and (b) after Anna got in deep trouble for her soccer-smash, Mason ran in to where she was having a time-out and said “it’s OK Anna, it’s OK!” even though SHE had just smacked HIM. He is sooooooooo nice to her and just worships her. Whatever she does, he wants to do. (“Ballet Mommy, ballet!”) She fell down and was crying later and while Stephie was hugging Anna, he ran to hug them both and patted Anna’s back. What a sweetheart he is.

– Yuki arriving and Mason saying “my friend Yuki is here!” and Anna then trying to surprise Yuki with me being there (“cover your eyes Yuki!”) as she led her into the kitchen, HA!

– Hanging out in their SF life. Multiple times we ran into families they knew, and they now live in a very kid-full neighborhood, where Stephie and Mike are friends with all the parents. (I went to a cocktail hour in their neighborhood on Friday that illustrated this; secretly I think I’d love to be an anthropologist, because I really enjoyed not just meeting their friends but being in basically a whole different culture and wondering about that. Um, I also enjoyed some amazing fancy drinks, ha ha.) They really have it made and I don’t blame them for not wanting to leave Cali.

I also had a ton of fun just hanging out with Stephie and Mike, and we even got to go to a nice dinner on Friday after the cocktail hour which was so great. I got to chit chat with Stephie a ton which I loved and drank my typical megadose of West Coast caffeinated drinks thanks to her…yay. (I am craving an iced latte now actually…) We also: went to the farmers market where the kids ran around and we ate fancy yogurt in ceramic cups (and where Mason hit me with his balloon all the way home), did a lot of throwing/twirling the kids around (impressing grandmas everywhere), watched a pretty decent movie on Saturday night after the kids went to bed/before I left, got our nails done WOOOOOOO!, went to the Warming Hut for iced lattes and photo ops and ‘souvenirs’ (mermaid doll which Anna then put in the bathtub?? ha) and much more. I also left with lovely candy and a new shirt, bonus! And found black quinoa and cherry green tea. Ahhh food. It was somewhat chilly but way sunny and just a gorgeous trip.

WordPress is telling me the word count for this post is 1367 which is ridiculous I suppose. Ah well. All I’m trying to do is record it the best I can for it was magical. These kids are little gems and they grow up so fast. I wish they lived closer but really, as I kept saying, what they have is “the life”. Miss them all already though! What a great trip.

dream little darling dream

“Out of the darkness comes light like a flash / you think you can you think you can / sometimes that is the problem / dream little darling dream…”

—Dave Matthews Band, You Never Know

Around this time of year a lot of my high school (and now college) nostalgia starts to kick in hardcore. No worries as the same is true of this year. Luckily I have surprises and plans happening for Sarah’s wedding to keep the college nostalgia part occupied at least. Here I was going to post to some old journal entries but after reading them they are too embarrassing to actually direct people to. Yet, I leave them. What can I say, posterity man (and narcissism).

God damn sometimes I can’t believe I am 29 (even though my body is making it loud and clear).

Anyway.

In keeping with the fancy theme…

An incomplete list of Things I Am Working On (Or Thinking About Working On):

– updating my entire pants wardrobe. My pants are all too ratty/small/dumb and need to be replaced. Unfortunately I am a size 3 at The Gap aka the only place I shop, and they don’t do odd sizes. Ridic. Also unfortunately I hate pants shopping. But. It Must Be Done.
– updating my shoe wardrobe. I have three types of shoes in mind, now to find them. They must be extra comfortable. Suggestions welcome. (Black flats, neutral sandal-types, and possibly mid-tall black boots…possibly.)
– Getting back in the habit of reading actual BOOKS instead of The Internet/news/blogs. Must work on this!!!
– Walking around at least twice a day on a workday, preferably outside at least once. Good for your health.
– Looking away from my monitor every 20 minutes at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds each time (thank you, Women’s Health magazine). Failing. But attempting.
– freelance…always, always freelance
– considering water sports/swimming team
– considering business school
– reading Spanish blogs (in direct conflict with BOOKS NOT BLOGS above, yes, but I just miss Spanish and feel I could re-pick-it-up relatively easily)
– going back to gymnastics-style conditioning vs. lifting heavy weights
– eating more vegetables…succeeding admirably if I do say so myself
– reviving walking man (will it stick??)
– dreaming up a decent drawing project
– dreaming up my future
– still dreaming about opening a gym one day

& more, but that’s what you get for now. Off to SF tomorrow, woo hoo!!!!!

fancy / EOTWs

“Oh you fancy huh?!”

—Drake, Michael, Jeff, etc.

I know I had a better quote to share but this is all that comes to mind. Naturally listening to the song as I type, too.

The past two weekends have been so solid that they deserve a great big

EOTWs

(End Of The WeekendS)

This weekend:
Home early Friday to the second BIKE RIDE!!!!!! of the weekend. Sunny muddy gorgeous ride around the lakes. Getting warm! I might believe it’s truly spring! Showering and sewing. Jeff home with groceries then I made homemade pizza rolls / BOMBS. They were giant but amazing. Thank you Eat Live Run. (Oh yeah timeout last week this triathlete whose blog I follow emailed me after a comment I left so that was pretty cool. Speaking of fandom / random?. Random fandom.) Dinner. Fell asleep watching various media while Jeff fixed some random stuff in the basement (????). Not sure. To Bed!

Up early Saturday = love being up early. Coffee? Yes. Cleanup. Massive spring birthdays gift wrapping ensued! Along with some more sewing. Sewing weekend (mission accomplished, though!). Another BIKE RIDE!!!!!! this time along the river. Gorgeous mighty river, so much sun. I really would like to bike the Mississippi sometime. Someday! Home, shower, clean up and back out again to LAURA’S M&M BIRTHDAY PARTY. She was 2. (“Laura is two,” as she said.) A very nice drive there under probably the most beautiful spring sky I’ve ever seen. So blue, such pretty clouds. I really am overwhelmed with the idea that SPRING actually exists and MIGHT ARRIVE. Whew.

It was a fantastico party all-around, one of my favorite parties in a long time! Christie is really the hostess with the mostess. She thought of it ALL! (Leave no great party stone unturned.) M&M varieties, cute favors and decorations, homemade ice cream cake, pizza, fancy beer, etc. Good times. I hit it off with Christie + Mike + Matt’s cousin Jake again (we were big buddies at Christie’s wedding 5 years ago). Now he is 10. Obviously we were meant to be friends, too bad we are 19 years apart. We started a ‘who can eat more pizza’ war which resulted in me eating more pizza than intended. Oops. Other great party highlights: talking to Glenn about his tax situation/issues (since it’s not a real problem it was funny), talking to Kaitlin about Europe and Mike and Kaitlin about Jeff’s crazy ‘pronunciate’ idea (not a word!) AND his idea of people rolling to get places (vs walking), drawing with chalk outside (cat-giraffe), helping Lily mow the stairs (dangerous), and Laura in the little car. Laura is just so darn adorable. She was also the victim of a theft from her car! But all was resolved.

We drove home listening to the end of the Butler-VCU game and summary on AM radio. The sky was still a bit light and we cruised from freeway to freeway. It was such an intensely Ordinary American Moment and for some creepy but true reason it filled me with intense joy—leaving a family birthday party for a 2-year-old, on my way home with my husband, listening to sports on the radio while driving the freeway. I think in the end, for all my whining, what I crave is the Ordinary American Life. With my quirks, but, you know. It was a very nice moment.

Jeff then decided to install a new ceiling fan in the back bedroom at 9pm. Only at our house would electrical work begin after dark on a Saturday night. THAT is how we roll. I spent awhile trying to help him figure out which circuit breaker to throw and did some laundry/watched a movie. Still sewing. Then passed out. Saturday night at our house = excitement supreme!!! However, Jeff installed the fan successfully, felt like a man, and we now have an awesome new fan. Go Jeff!

Up early today and did some yoga courtesy YogaYak/YouTube. Good stuff. Breakfast then out to Cottage Grove to visit Sue/then to Jeff’s friend Sarah’s parents’ house for HER birthday celebration. SPRING BIRTHDAY BONANZA! Her dad is an amazing cook and made us Mexican brunch. SUPERB in every way. Her parents were absolute gems and they just made me laugh and laugh. Her mom was so funny and wanted to bike everywhere. It made me think of ME in 30 years, ha! Good times had by all in the Grove. Home to have some fun before bed. Finished laundry, FINISHED sewing, talked to my mom, hopped on the bike again (Nokomis)!, read about gymnastics regionals, messed around, and decided to stay up late/skip the gym for more fun. Today also felt like an intensely normal Ordinary American Day and I loved it. DUH.

OK it looks like it’s time for bed. I will have to continue the last-weekend EOTW some other time. Or actually, in case I don’t, it was about: info sessions, Hell’s Kitchen brunch with Kristin and Alyssa, fancy shopping/girls in skirts in 30-degree weather, pastries with my friend Colleen, good conversations, St. Paul tequila bar / dancing with Kristin + friends for her bday, an excellent swim, baking, and some work. Solid stuff. I love weekends.

Good night!

single-gendered education: a rant

I have approximately 239579437 things to update about/that I should write about, but instead you are about to get an UNEDUCATED, INFURIATED RANT (the best kind, right? JK). So. This morning while eating our oatmeal/on the way to work, we listened to Mid-Morning with Kerri Miller on MPR (= typical morning for our household). The topic? Single-gendered education. You can read and hear more here:

Mid-Morning March 31, 2011

As I am wont to do, I was immediately infuriated by much of this. (Yes, I am one of those obnoxious people who gets riled up about radio shows.) Basically this guy’s idea is that girls and boys learn differently, not necessarily in a psychological/mental sense but in the sense that they change their behavior when in single-gender groups which makes their learning more effective etc etc etc. I don’t doubt that he has evidence supporting this and that is great. HOWEVER. I have many problems with this, which I shall list below (mostly to spare Jeff from having to listen to me rant on the way home tonight as well). WARNING LEXI RANTING ABOUT THINGS IN WHICH SHE IS NOT INFORMED/EDUCATED TO FOLLOW:

1. The idea of gender as a binary concept. I am intrigued that this is apparently so acceptable, especially by academic types. Gender seems to me to be nearly as binary as sexuality, which is to say not at all. Pretty sure it’s more of a gradient, and while most folks seem to favor one end of the gradient or the other, this doesn’t mean All Boys Are Alike or All Girls Are Alike. They are individuals and ideally should be taught as such, regardless. This means doing certain things for gals and certain things for boys, sure, but that depends on their OWN INDIVIDUALITY. Yo.

2. (This one bothers me the MOST.) There is absolutely an implicit message in single-gendered education that is pretty uncomfortable if you think about it for more than a few seconds (actually multiple implicit messages but let’s stick with one). The message is that boys and girls learn differently which leads to the idea that women and men can only succeed if in their own single-gendered setting. This is something that is likely to perpetuate throughout an individual’s life if he or she spends time in single-gendered education, I should think. Really you’re telling kids that in order to succeed they must find themselves in a particular setting, learning in a particular way, which shall not be present for their entire lives so…..WTF? Supposedly one learns throughout life, no?? Bringing me to…

3. Eventually we all have to work together, more or less, be it in the workplace, neighborhood/community, family, etc., whatever. So it’s completely unrealistic to expect that kind of symbiosis to develop naturally if you keep genders separate throughout early development. It just seems insane to me. And I can just see some girl working with a bunch of enginerds (someone like Jenny) feeling like she can’t learn as well as they can since she’s working in a 1:15 female:male ratio. I mean, really!

(NOTE I have NO IDEA what I’m talking about, this is just me ranting aimlessly! Obviously.)

I know no one reads this blog other than Michael J, Critie and Sven, but I had to get this out there, and Twitter is too short to do it justice (and I am trying to avoid debates like this on Facebook these days). So there you have it! Rant over! Please enjoy the rest of your day.

March 22nd, 2011

health, family, safety, balance

In following up on this post, I came to this conclusion—there are a few overarching themes in my List of Things That Are Important to Me.

Boiled down, four of the things/themes that are most important to me are the following:

-Health
-Family
-Safety
-Balance

Safety includes things such as risk aversion, a stable financial situation (aka money in the bank), and generally staying out of dangerous situations. Balance includes things like sleep, down time, Getting Things Done (VERY important to me, failed to make the previous list but should have), alone time, time w/ Jeff, enough work vs. play vs. laziness in general; balance ALSO includes FAIRNESS & JUSTICE for all and doing what I can to maintain that. Health includes both physical health (and doing what I can to maintain it) and mental health (working on that), which also includes new experiences/travels/Learning New Things (the latter of which also should have been on the previous list). Family…having my family & caring for them however I can (this one I have LeRoy The Great to thank for).

The Universe is (pardon my language; oh who am I kidding) fucking with me this year WRT this list in ways small + large, so I thought it was important to record.

Tired.

things I see

I forgot to write this – a few weeks ago we saw a bald eagle swoop right by our car in the way to the gym, not two blocks from our house. Totally awesome and completely unexpected. I wonder where he lives and what brought him here? (ETA: OK apparently I was with Jenny when this happened [on her visit], whoops. Gettin’ my JJs confused.)

Today at the coffeeshop I saw a very typically Midwestern Mom having coffee with her adorable tween daughter who appeared to be adopted. I eavesdropped for a moment on their how-to-deal-with-friends conversation. It made me smile.

Now I am eating fresh, toasted wheat sourdough from the amazing Patisserie 46 with melted butter, listening to 99.5 and drinking my fancy latte. Soon to swim, sew, make cards and make soup.

I lead a pretty ordinary, pretty extraordinary life.

happy HAPPY Friday!

“I loved when you hit us with a ‘duh.’ Bring back ‘duh!’ “

—Michael J.

“Apparently it wasn’t built to withstand the modern urban crime environment.”

—Herk, The Wire

I am in an extraordinarily wonderful mood today and I feel the need to document this as (a) I was in an extraordinarily pissy mood yesterday and the day before (esp the day before, which led to some pretty great Emotional Eating which was awesome, ha) and (b) my extraordinarily wonderful moods waned for quite awhile this winter and are now returning in small bursts here and there.

REASONS WHY I AM SO HAPPY TODAY:

-no one was hurt in the gas explosion in my ‘hood yesterday! THAT is truly amazing, folks
-It’s FRIDAY! My favorite day for many good reasons. Happy Friday!
-I might actually be understanding this iPhone app dev shit…I hope
-I had blueberry pancakes for breakfast! Pancake Friday!
-along with awesome Fage yogurt!
-(since we’re talking about food) I also made my first-ever fritatta yesterday and it was superb IMVHO…yesssss. And in cast iron no less. (That makes two new recipes tried + successfully delivered this week!…I am thinking/hoping on trying yet another new recipe next week too so I am excited about that too)
-Big 10s tomorrow! Go UMN! Yay for big gymnastics events in my city!
-I might go on an errands-walk for lunch in Skywayland, always fun!
-drinking hot tea right now, yummmmm (actually it’s kind of gross, some weird decaf chai WTF?)
-Ibuprofen rocks, never underestimate the power of DRUGS (in the modern urban crime environment)
-(speaking of crime) I found this really cool new crime map! http://spotcrime.com/ I just think it’s cool
-Lots of website making and sewing to do this weekend but I feel a surge of productivity (I hope!) coming on
-I really do like the sewing part so yay for sewing
-RIDING MY BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tomorrow! I think! I hope! In the warmish (sunnyish?) daylight!
-Longer days! More light!
-Lots of ‘good’ (aka, good to ME ha) pop music lately…lovin’ it, thank you JLo Kanye + Black Eyed Peas!
-I’m going to San Francisco in 3 weeks!

OK! THAT my friends is enough crazy peppiness. No worries, my morose nature is sure to return, I wildly fluctuate (as you can see) between joy and misery.

IF you are NOT happy today and would like a laugh, might I recommend:

I fail to comment on Current Events on lxforever any longer but I will say that it has been a pretty shitty awful year so far for a lot of folks around the globe. Japan, Middle East, Sconnies even (remember, I am intensely focused in INCOME INEQUALITY these days!!!), you are all in my thoughts.

Over & out. Duh!
