Le Roy W. “Roy” Mason, age 87, of Baraboo, passed away peacefully in Baraboo on Friday, June 19, 2009. He was born on Dec. 21, 1921, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of the late Chester and Pauline (Mack) Mason. He graduated from Burlington High School and Burlington Junior College before entering the Army in 1942. The Army sent him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He was then assigned to the Manhattan Project for the remainder of World War II. He married the love of his life, Kathleen Krasuski of Burlington on July 25, 1944, at St. John the Baptist Church in Burlington. He was a lifetime member of the Catholic Church and worshipped for the last 50 years at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Baraboo. He served as basketball coach and athletic director for St. Joe’s school and was a church usher for many years. He also served on various building committees for St. Joe’s and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Roy spent his professional career working in the plastics industry. He started the injection molding department for Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa where he was employed as an engineer for 13 years. He moved his family to Baraboo in 1959 when he went to work at Flambeau Corporation. He held a number of positions at Flambeau before his retirement as vice president of engineering and then continued on as a director of Flambeau until 1997. He served on the Madison Area Technical College Foundation Board as vice president and president for 17 years, participated in cardiac rehab class and worked on the fundraising committee for St. Clare Hospital and it’s Cardiac Rehab wing, was a member and past president at Baraboo Country Club, volunteered each December for the Salvation Army, participated in and was awarded for his leadership in Boy Scouting, loved sports, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Chicago Cubs for many, many years. His true passion was loving and raising his family. He was most proud of all they did together. Roy is loved and will be remembered by his wife, Kathleen; his sons, Marc (Sharon) Mason, Steve (Barb) Mason, Mike (Jackie) Mason and Glenn (Barb) Mason; his daughters, Dr. Marsha (Pat Griffin) Mason, Connie (Tom) Burke and Jane (Todd) Theissen; his grandchildren, Katie Mason, Stephanie Ogborne, Lexi Akervik, Jenny Mason, Allison Welter, Patrick Mason, Lauren Mason, Charlie Griffin, Christie Bauer, Michael Mason, Matt Mason, Elizabeth Burke, Lisa Burke, Rachel Burke, Erik Theissen, Megan Theissen, Chloe Theissen and Ian Theissen; his three great-grandchildren; his brother, Richard (Betty) Mason of Avon Park, Fla.; his sister-in-law, Betty Mason of Fort Madison, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Lisa; his sisters, Louise Mason, Marian Long and Rita Mellinger; and his brother, Kenneth Mason. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Baraboo on Monday, June 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Father Larry Bakke officiating. Visitation will be held at ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Roy’s Family would like to thank Dr. Mathers, the staff at St. Clare Hospital, Home Health Hospice nurses, and his special nurse, Lisa Burke, for their kindness and special efforts over the last month of his life. The family also requests that in lieu of flowers, any memorials be directed to St. Clare Foundation or St. Joseph School Endowment Fund. A Prayer Service and visitation will be held in Burlington, Iowa at LUNNING FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at 10 a.m. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service with the burial to follow.
