The Art of the Arc
Somewhere along the way I made a leap. I ditched AP 11, dropped out of Aerospace, and made room for an art class or three, and kept it going from there. I was never going to be Brooke or Erik or any of the kids haunting the art lab for hours at a time, but I made my own way and found where I was meant to be.
When Mr. Lawrence, the teacher who chose to write “has a unique innate artistic ability” on my report card, heard I had gotten into MIT, he was the only teacher who was disappointed. “I heard a rumor,” he said of it one day in photography class, and when I assured him I didn’t intend to go there, was intent instead on pursuing graphic design at the University of Minnesota, his eyes lit up. In a sea full of achievers (in the one way), that was a gift.
I’ve gotten a little ways from that, and it doesn’t mean a lot other than: there’s more than where you are, and always a way back. It’s a long arc, and I’m lucky to be in it.
