the twilight zone
“if ‘happy ever after’ did exist”
—Maroon 5, PAYPHONE
It’s starting to feel a little creepy around these parts. I think Jeff is more anxious than I am about WHEN this baby might arrive, but by now we’re definitely both somewhat on edge. I keep trying to convince myself that I will go past my due date, and I still think I will, but at the same time…truly, any day now! OMG.
Anyway…despite this feeling of limbo-land, we had a very nice weekend! I don’t think this is the case, but it MAY be our last weekend as a family of two, so it deserves an…
EOTW
Friday after I finished up my video game memories blog in honor of Father’s Day, Jeff picked me up from work and we went grocery shopping together. More walking! He is determined! It was fun and fast and then we picked up Noodles (even though the one by us isn’t open yet, come on!). The main point of picking up Noodles was so that we could watch GAME OF THRONES. OBSESSED. We’re very close to being done with Season 2, too. So that was our Fancy Friday Night. Yeah!! Also after many sweaty nights I turned the air on. SO MUCH BETTER! I slept amazingly well. Thank you, A/C and airport!
Saturday I got up and went to yoga. The sun was shining and it was a glorious day. Yoga was good, I cracked a few jokes as usual. I realized a couple of people in the class are new to MN and have no non-work friends, so I briefly considered befriending them…but my snobbery got the better of me. Well, maybe next week. Off to Patina where I acquired a few nice cards. Then home to shower and clean up. Jeff mowed the lawn. We found a duck and her four baby ducklings (well, redundant) strolling around our yard. They appeared to be trapped! OH NO! So I tried to help them by opening the gate but that just scared mama duck. She freaked out and flew into our window, then into the neighbor’s yard. The little ducklings hopped through the fence and they were all squeaking loudly. OH NOOOO!!! I was very worried but they all reunited OK in the next yard over. Phew!
Then off to lunch! We met Jack and Laureen at the Tavern on France. We sat outside, and even though it rained a little bit it was nice. I had a raspberry lemonade and a BBQ chicken pizza. Jack is also obsessed with GAME OF THRONES. So we talked about that.
The BIG NEWS this week is that after 44 years at Marshall Erdman my Dad is RETIRING this August!!! It is shocking and wonderful. We are very proud of him. So we shared that bit of news too. Really cool!
We went home and it was gloomy out so we decided to watch…GAME OF THRONES. Yeah! However, I was really confused about what was going on. I thought maybe I’d fallen asleep but turns out we had skipped an ENTIRE EPISODE…not good. (Also not good is that we didn’t even notice until 24 hours later, HA. That’s how you know it’s a confusing show.) I attempted to nap, then washed more baby clothes/cleaned up/etc. instead. Played Bubble Mania on the ball. Made us some egg sandwiches and got myself ready for THE WEDDING!
It was actually just a reception. I figured we would know maybe two people outside of the bride and groom so I was a bit wary of the evening. However, it turned out to be FANTASTIC FUN!!! It was in downtown Minneapolis at the Day Block Event Center and it was for Angela and Seth. I worked with Angela and Seth at Ham in the Fridge and that is when they became secret lovers. Now they are wife and husband! We arrived shortly after 8 and Angela was greeting people at the door. She looked amazing! She took one look at me and burst out laughing which is pretty much how I felt when I was getting dressed for the wedding – I thought “am I REALLY going to a wedding at 39 weeks pregnant?!” OMG. Well I did. Anyway. Big hugs and then upstairs we went. The first hour Jeff and I killed chit-chatting, drinking water, writing a mad lib (so fun!), greeting the newlyweds, and exploring the event center. We figured we’d leave pretty soon.
Anyway then I noticed my friend Jon and his new fiancee (not that he had an old one, but that he recently got engaged) and went over to say hi. And then our night lasted much longer! His fiancee was a total doll and she just swept us both up in her friendliness and enthusiasm and weirdness. Her name was Jill. Jeff thought Jon should change his name to Jack but no go. Anyway. Jon is a really cool dude, he was a superstar developer when I was at Ham (now he is a superstar somewhere else) and just a really interesting guy, Jill was super crazy and fun. We talked about their wedding and its planet/homeless(donating the food)/city-friendly style. I inspected Jill’s ring and we admired it – a Sri Lankan sapphire in a vintage setting. YES!! Yay sapphires. They in turn admired Jeff’s little ruby (alas I can no longer wear my rings…someday!).
Then Jill asked if she could touch my abdomen and I immediately apologized for touching her hand without asking (to inspect the ring). THIS is what started our night off right! Jill was fascinated by the belly and could not stop touching it all night. She tried to massage it down and claimed she was helping to encourage the “little girl” to come on out and it was pretty freaking hilarious. (I find it very amusing that I do not mind people touching my BODY yet I am supremely offended if they so much as inquire about my cervix. Hmmmm. Anyway. I think it’s because I poke around my belly all day long anyway. PLUS it was just hard to refuse Jill, she was so effusive.)
ANYWAY, so the next couple of hours flew by and we did some photoboothing, glasses-wearing, eating tiny cupcakes, doing lots of joking, and other things. Someone finally came over and asked Jeff if he needed HIS belly massaged. HA HA. I saw Mary Lou and it was so great to see her, and meet her husband! I hadn’t seen her in a long time. We’ll have to do coffee when I’m back at work or whatever. I got to introduce Jeff to her too which was great. Anyway it ended up being a really fun night! Finally around 11 I had to call it, I was way too tired from standing for so long! I have no idea if we will ever see Jill again but she made it a really fun night for us both. Yeah!
We got some food, came home, and I passed out. WHEW!
Woke up Sunday before Jeff and made some muffins and laid out a few Father’s Day gifts/cards. Sneaky! Finally I went back in and he was awake, good morning! *sniffs the air for scent of muffins* Yep! We did some chores, ate some breakfast, and puttered around. Opened cards etc! Yay! Then left the house and found a CAT UP IN THE TREE RIGHT NEXT TO OUR HOUSE. Not kidding. We have no idea whose cat it is but she was pretty high up in the tree. It was so bizarre! We didn’t know what to do. We tried to coax her down but she was not having it and just climbed higher. I decided that we would just see if she was still there when we returned and deal with her then.
Finally we set off for an epic lake walk! It was way sunny out and beautiful all around. To and around Lake Nokomis. I was prepared! There were so many people out and at the beach, too, and we saw a LOT of dogs. Lots of big dogs, wet from swimming! Quite a lively day. It was very warm and sunny and we soaked it up. Gorgeous long walk!
Home, food, prep, then out to the pool. YES! I showed up at almost the exact right time and shortly scored a great lounge chair in my favorite spot. Watched some crazy kids diving and read my Steve Jobs book…almost done. Got really hot and got in the water, which was quite cool! But nice. I enjoyed a good solid two hours at the pool. I just love pools. Had some ice cream, read my book, swam, watched people, etc. Yet another stranger guessed I was having a boy (note: at the wedding though Angela’s mom was certain I was having a girl, so, there ya go, she said that’s how she looked when she was carrying Angela; who knows!), I informed him of the truth. Then I noticed dark clouds gathering and thus set out for home, Jeff even called on the way home to make sure I was coming home, some weird thunderstorm cropping up. Nothing really happened though…anyway. Good to be safe. And I felt so happy and relaxed after all that sun/pool time. Amazing.
Home it was, where I called my Dad and chatted about his life and retirement and the weather and the US Open. Then made dinner and we realized our GAME OF THRONES error and had to go back an episode. OOPS. I then insisted we stay current on Mad Men. Then a little game-playing then bed. In the AIR CONDITIONING. Yeah!!! What a fabulous weekend.
Now…it is June 17 and I’m just hanging out. Not much to report. TWILIGHT ZONE.
And “see you tomorrow” is starting to have ominous connotations.
See you tomorrow.
